News was first revealed this week that the United States Mint would produce these type of coins at the San Francisco Mint — a facility which normally strikes only collector quality coins.
This week the United States Mint has confirmed that it is producing and developing numismatic products with circulation quality 2012-S quarters that are manufactured at the San Francisco Mint.
There are two unique aspects to this development. First, as these quarters will be produced for numismatic or collector sale, they will not be released into circulation for use in daily commerce like pennies, nickels, dimes and other quarters. They will only be available from and sold by the United States Mint. Continue reading San Francisco Mint Circulation Quality 2012-S Quarters→
After entering circulation on April 2, Chaco Culture National Historical Park quarters will get an official introduction on Thursday, April 26, 2012, in the form of a ceremonial launch. A coin forum the night prior to the event will also be conducted, the United States Mint announced Tuesday.
On April 2, 2012, the United States Mint will join with the Federal Reserve Bank to release the Chaco Culture National Historical Park Quarter. On that day, the newest issue from the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program will be released into circulation by the Federal Reserve with bags and rolls of the coins also available for ordering directly from the U.S. Mint.
The Chaco Culture Quarters are the second of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program to be issued in 2012 and follow the El Yunque National Forest Quarters which made their debut on January 23, 2012. All of the coins in the series (which debuted in 2010) honor a different site of national interest from around the United States and its territories with a design located on their reverse. Today, March 14, 2012 the United States Mint and the U.S. National Forest System hosted a public launch ceremony for the El Yunque National Forest Quarter.
Treasurer of the United States, Rosie Rios, spoke during ceremony that was held at the El Portal Rain Forest Visitor Center, inside the national forest located in Puerto Rico.
"El Yunque National Forest is a perfect selection for the America the Beautiful Quarters Program," said Treasurer Rios. "As Americans use this new quarter, they will connect to the stories of the endangered Puerto Rican parrot, the magnificent effort you are making to rescue this beautiful bird from extinction, and the biodiverse national treasure that is its home — El Yunque National Forest."
On Friday, February 3, 2012, the United States Mint will begin selling rolls and bags of Puerto Rico’s 2012 El Yunque National Forest Quarters. The coins were released into public circulation on January 23.
The El Yunque quarter is the first in 2012 and the eleventh in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program that started in 2010. Its design on its reverse features the Coqui tree frog and a Puerto Rican parrot in a tropical setting. The designer was Gary Whitley and the engraver was Michael Gaudioso.
Prices for the new products have been marked lower than last year’s issues. Instead of being $49.95, 100-coin bags of the El Yunque National Forest Quarters are each $34.95, and the two-roll sets are $32.95 instead of $39.95. The main reasons for the lower prices were the result of the U.S. Mint’s efforts to refine the product costing process and negotiate better prices from its suppliers, the bureau states. The United States Mint planned three days of events to celebrate the launch of the 2011 Chickasaw National Recreation Area Quarter.
These new coins honor the national site in Sulphur, Oklahoma. The reverse design on the Chickasaw quarter features the Lincoln Bridge over Travertine Creek. The limestone bridge, a popular destination within the park, was dedicated in 1909 to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The coin’s design was created by Donna Weaver and engraved by Jim Licaretz.
