The United States Mint has announced official launch ceremony details for the next two coins in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program– the Glacier National Park Quarter honoring the site in Montana and the Olympic National Park Quarter honoring the site in Washington.
These two quarter are but two of the five scheduled to be released by the US Mint this year under the program which debuted just last year. The series features reverse designs emblematic of selected sites of national interest from around the United States and its territories. Gettysburg, a town synonymous in many people’s minds with the American Civil War, was the site on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, for the United States Mint’s official public launch ceremony of the Gettysburg National Military Park Quarter.
The brand new quarter features the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry Monument on the reverse side and the familiar portrait of George Washington on the obverse. It is the sixth quarter in the America the Beautiful Quarters® that started last year, and it is the first of its kind to honor a Civil War park. The US Mint published images of the reverse side of the uncirculated versions for each of the five National Parks that will be featured this year on U.S. quarters.
In the order that the National Park Quarters will be released into circulation, the honorees are Pennsylvania’s Gettysburg National Military Park, Montana’s Glacier National Park, Washington’s Olympic National Park, Mississippi’s Vicksburg National Military Park, and Oklahoma’s Chickasaw National Recreation Area.
The festivities are scheduled to be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at the World Forestry Center located at 4033 SW Canyon Road in Portland, Oregon, just a few miles away from the borders of the national forest itself. A start time of 10:30 AM (Pacific) is listed.
A coin exchange will also be offered following the ceremony, typical of other U.S. Mint releases. At the exchange, guests will be able to trade cash for rolls of the 2010 Mount Hood Quarters. The United States Mint debuted Arizona’s Grand Canyon quarter to visitors of all ages on Tuesday, September 21, during an outdoor launch ceremony at the Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim, not far from the El Tovar Hotel. The new quarter-dollar is the fourth release of the America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program.
Superintendent of Grand Canyon National Park Steve Martin emceed the function and was joined by several others in introducing the new Grand Canyon National Park Quarter. Anticipation is growing for the Grand Canyon National Park Quarter release, which is the fourth coin in the America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program.
The new Grand Canyon quarter is likely to become one of the top souvenirs for the popular park, which draws 4.5-5 million visitors each year. With that kind of popularity, a sizable crowd is expected at the quarter’s launch ceremony on Tuesday, September 21, at 1:30 PM Mountain Time.
