The United States Mint produces all legal tender American coinage and distributes most of it to Federal Reserve Banks across the country. In turn, these banks deliver coins to local banks and other financial institutions as needed. On Monday the new Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarters, minted in Philadelphia (P) and Denver (D), will enter the circulation process, but it could take a long time to see them in everyday change.

There is a way to get them quickly. Also on Monday, at noon Eastern Time, the U.S. Mint will begin selling rolls and bags of circulation quality Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarters. Not only those from Philadelphia and Denver, but also San Francisco minted quarters, with the "S" mint mark, that are produced just for collectors and not for the regular circulation process.

Across the spectrum, products for sale by the Mint will include:

  • Hawaii Volcanoes Quarter 40-coin Rolls, San Francisco, for $18.95
  • Hawaii Volcanoes Quarter 100-coin Bags, San Francisco, for $34.95
  • Hawaii Volcanoes Quarter 100-coin Bags, Philadelphia, for $34.95
  • Hawaii Volcanoes Quarter 100-coin Bags, Denver, for $34.95
  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarter Two-Roll Sets, (40 P & 40 D), for $32.95

Quarter Design

On the reverse of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarters is a design depicting an eruption on the east rift of Kilauea Volcano, where lava has been erupting continuously since 1983. It was designed by Charles L. Vickers, and surrounding it are inscriptions of HAWAI’I VOLCANOES, HAWAII, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

Shown on the obverse of all national park quarters is a portrait of former President George Washington, by John Flanagan. It has been digitally enhanced for the America the Beautiful Quarters Program to bring out its original beauty. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.

Where to Order the Rolls and Bags

Upon their release, these rolls and bags may be purchased at the United States Mint website, http://www.usmint.gov/, or by phone, at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). A $4.95 for shipping and handling fee applies to all domestic orders.

Coming soon is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarters Three-Coin Set on September 4 for $9.95. It will contain an uncirculated quarter from the United States Mint facility in Philadelphia and Denver plus a proof quarter from the United States Mint facility in San Francisco.

Next up in the National Park Quarters series is the 2012 Denali National Park and Preserve Quarters. It honors the national park located in Alaska, and its scheduled circulation date is November 5, 2012.

  1. The quarters don’t seem to be spead out equally across the contry. It’s difficult to find the quarters.
